The structure and behaviour of hierarchical infrastructure networks

Abstract Critical services depend on infrastructure networks for their operation and any disruption to these can have significant impacts society, the economy, quality of life. Such be characterised as graphs which used understand structural properties, effect behaviour robustness hazards. Using a suite critical networks, this study aims show that exhibit hierarchical structure are more likely less robust comparatively non-hierarchical when exposed failures, including those supply services. This investigates properties through identifying set key characteristics from an ensemble graph models then in comparative analysis against spatial networks. A failure model is implemented applied implications structures real world perturbations. The concludes three metrics, cycle basis, maximum betweenness centrality assortativity coefficient, identify extent hierarchy graphs, where lack linked structure, feature exhibited both
